The Crab

wenty-five years ago, my mother had breast cancer and they lopped one off. Don't like thinking about that much. Two years ago cancer had metastacized throughout her body and in her bones. My cousin the doctor looked at the report and said she had weeks, maybe months to live.

She decided to make a liar of my cousin, mainly because of my deranged, drug-saturated brother, who's been parasitically dependent on her for most of his 48 years. She knew that when she went, his slide into mortal decay would continue.

But now he's left California for Oregon, cause a warrant's been issued and he can't come back. He still counts on Social Security to send a monthly check to my mom's bank for her to transfer to another account that he can withdraw from. That's coming to an end soon. I'm tired of my taxes going to such con artists. The last time I saw my brother, he was about to beat on his girlfriend again, so I grabbed him, punched him in the nose, and held him down as he spit curses and herpes-infested blood into my face 'til the cops could cuff him and take him away. Mom would never admit that the bruises on her came from him. My last words to him were, "Stay away from my house--stay away from my wife."

A pleasant evening with family...

Mom had surgery last week to remove a block in her colon. But the doc found everything so riddled with cancer, all the doc could do was give her a colostomy bag and sew her up.

Now she needs full-time care and she's being transferred today to a nursing home where one of her friends is staying.

Oh joy...

Reminds me of a cartoon of three old ladies sitting at a table. A sign in the back says "Nursing Home." One lady's saying, "Eating well, extending life, all for THIS?"

But there's no other option. She likes the town she's in, she has visitors every day, because Jehovah's Witnesses are very good about that sort of thing.

Now I travel the 90 minutes each way once a week to be with her for an hour... and wait... and watch the advancing crab on the sand in the hourglass...
